History

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY (NISIR)

The Nigerian Society of Interventional Radiology (NiSIR)  was nurtured over a long period of time. There had been diagnostic angiography in UCH Ibadan and University of Lagos Teaching Hospital LUTH  since the late 80’ and 90’s by Prof Ogunseyinde, Prof Adeyinka and Prof Awosanya using conventional fluoroscopy machines. However  NiSIR as body was brooded over time since 2010 during a retreat  on Medical Education in Lagos at Akodo Beach Resort organized by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. In attendance was  Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, Prof. Adeyinka A, Dr Adeyomoye A, Prof. Isyaku Kabiru and Prof. Soyebi. Also a caretaker committee was inaugurated with Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo as the Acting chairman. In 2012 General Electric GE Healthcare  in Abuja summit with more than 12 Radiologist in attendance attempted to include the cardiologist however this attempt was not successful.

The Nigerian Society of Interventional Radiology (NiSIR) was formally established in August 2016 at the fellows meeting of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the where the first interim executive, committees and subcommittees members were selected. Since then, we have come a long way. Today, this society has over 300 members and performs many activities,  conducting institutional IR local clubs  and annual national level scientific meetings. IR is at cross-roads in Nigeria today. There are perpetual shortages of equipment and hardware which is either not available or is mismatched to requirement. Most products are still imported, the prices are steep and not matched to the average per capita income of the Nigerian  households. Indigenization of the hardware technology and their local production is essential to bridge the above gap. We also face turf issues with various other sub-specialties, including those from cardiology, neurology, neuro-surgery, gastro-enterology and vascular surgery. There is also a lack of trained manpower. Most medical colleges in Nigeria  are still not geared to train radiology post graduates in interventional radiology.

NiSIR is fully registered with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission. The first NiSIR conference was held at MRC AUDITORIUM LAGOS STATE UNOVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, IKEJA, LAGOS, NIGERIA, on the 18TH SEPTEMBER, 2018.

The purpose of the NiSIR is to advance the art and science of Interventional Radiology and research through educational, scientific, literary, advocacy, regulatory, and professional activities.

In order to achieve its aim, the Society’s ongoing long-term activities include:

  1. The promotion of Interventional Radiology to young doctors;
  2. The establishment of the formal fellowship program, accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons
  3. The encouragement of appropriate recognition for Interventional Radiology from the industry;
  4. The communication to relevant authorities of problem areas within Interventional Radiology.
  5. International recognition of interventional radiology fellowship/licensing from Nigeria.
  6. Affiliation with more experienced sister organizations regionally and globally for the purpose of advancement of the science and practice of cardiovascular and interventional radiology in Nigeria and beyond.

So far the society is making efforts to broaden the membership base within and outside Nigeria as well as establishing international contacts to train members and mentoring.

The strategic planning group is working on advocacy document to encourage governmental agencies and private sector to invest in to IR and also for the country to had minimum of state-of-the-art IR reference center in each of the 6 geo-political zones of Nigeria.
